Established in 1988
Joshua’s began life in 1988 as a humble farm shop, rooted in a passion for organic produce and sustainable living. The seed was planted when experienced organic farmers Mark and Jude Essame returned to Devon after five years of growing fruit and vegetables in New Zealand. Settling in Ottery St Mary, East Devon, they began growing and selling their own organic vegetables and flowers—laying the foundations for what would become a much-loved, family-run store.
Now in its second generation, Joshua’s is proudly run by two of Mark and Jude’s children. Over the past three decades, our offering has grown far beyond the original harvest. Alongside the fresh fruit and vegetables we’ve always been known for, Joshua’s now stocks an extensive range of speciality foods and store cupboard ingredients—everything from pulses, grains and dried fruits to jams, chutneys, baking supplies, fine biscuits, confectionery, drinks and more. Many customers travel from miles around to find some of our more unusual and exotic ingredients.

Since 2003 we have been making our own ready meals onsite. These are made with no additives or preservatives, using free-range, humanely reared meats. Our homemade meals cater for both vegetarian and vegan diets. Our deli counter is a constant temptation, featuring freshly made pasties, quiches, pies, and a wide selection of cheeses. And don’t leave without trying one of Joshua’s famous homemade cakes - our tarts, scones, and flapjacks are baked daily, and the smell alone is worth the trip.
Beyond food, our homeware section has also blossomed. From practical kitchenware to quirky gifts, organic beauty products, books, and classic toys and games for children, we’ve curated a collection that reflects our love for quality, craftsmanship and charm. We also sell and rent electric bikes from our premises.
